Artist in Residency with special guest Kristen Cerelli Psychophysical Acting Intensive
Psychophysical Acting Intensive
Unlock your whole story and create dynamic, unpredictable performances through the world renowned Michael Chekhov approach and the incredible psychophysical Rasaboxes approach (developed at NYU’s experimental theatre wing), engaging the whole body-mind.
We are honored to bring in Kristen Cerelli, a National Michael Chekhov Association certified expert, to lead us in these unique and highly coveted approaches to acting.
On the life changing work, through the Michael Chekhov Technique and Psychological Gesture, Kristen says…
“It doesn’t matter what it looks like to us, it matters what it excites and enlivens in you.”
“The critical thing about gesture is using your entire body, 100% of your body.”
“Michael Chekhov developed an acting technique, a ‘psycho-physical approach’, in which transformation, working with impulse, imagination and inner and outer gesture are central. It offers clear and practical tools in working with imagination, feelings and atmosphere.”

Three Part Program General: $250 | Ongoing Students $150

If you’ve ever struggled as a performer to activate your actions and objectives, to shed your personal inhibitions around the pursuit of those objectives, to have a visceral, in-the-moment impact on your acting partner, or to authentically embody the acting homework you’ve so diligently done in your head and on paper, this class will shift your perspective. We’re always told “acting is physical” but the Chekhov technique offers the actor practical somatic tools that actually roots them in breath, body and action. Students will learn the 10 archetypal gestures as taught by the master teachers of the National Michael Chekhov Association and begin applying them to text and relationship.
Participation in this class requires completion of the Tuesday night intro class or prior Chekhov Training.
Application of Chekhov’s Psychological Gesture
Thursday, October 21st 6:00 – 10:00 pm (or when the work is done)
Three Part Program General Public: $250 | Ongoing Students $150
Single General Public: $85| Ongoing Students: $50
Some of the greatest, most moving performances of stage, tv and film have been grounded in the actor’s use of psychological gesture. Building on the actor’s ownership of archetypal gesture, psychological gesture work moves the actors into a higher plane by awakening the actor-character connection via the realm of thoughts, feelings, imagination and inspiration. For actors who consider themselves seekers, working with psychological gesture will often bring profound insights unavailable to the logical mind, and though it is perhaps Chekhov’s most well known contribution to the art of acting and actor training, the application of psychological gesture to one’s life and path are boundless.
Participation in this class requires completion of the Tuesday night intro class or prior Chekhov Training.
Rasaboxes
Saturday October 23rd 10:00am – 6:00pm (or when the work is done)
General Public: $150 | Ongoing Students: $100
Based on Richard Schechner’s work at NYU’s experimental theatre wing, rasaboxes trains participants to physically express eight key emotions first identified in the Natyasastra, a Sanskrit text dealing with theatre, dance, and music. What does Rasaboxes work do for the artist? It shows us the power of our body and breath on our art. It opens conversation around habit, fear, resistance, judgment and change. It helps us confront the parts of ourselves we embrace and the parts we avoid. It allows us to make space for our weaknesses and to build strength in small steps. It trains us in the subtle art of holding two or more seemingly conflicting feelings at once, re-framing our sense of what’s possible in the human experience. It illuminates how we relate to ourselves and to others. It encourages us to let go of things that don’t serve us. It teaches us that artistic expression can be healthy and pain free. It reminds us that we are not alone.
This class will have a 45 minutes lunch break.
